Huntsville Stars (46-33) 8, Carolina Mudcats (42-37) 1
Zebulon, NC --- Alcides Escobar was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in leading Huntsville to an 8-1 victory over Carolina Thursday night in front of 2,986 fans at Five County Stadium.
Brae Wright (W,6-6) pitched eight innings for Huntsville, allowing only one run and six hits. Steve Bray came on in the ninth and gave up just one hit before closing out Carolina.
Willie Glen (L,4-2) pitched three and two-thirds innings for Carolina, giving up seven hits and five runs, four of them earned.
Todd Doolittle pitched for the first time in 48 days for the Mudcats, retiring three batters in order in the top of the ninth.
Carlos Corporan went 4-4 with a walk for Huntsville (5-4), with three singles and a double.
Escobar started his productive hitting in the top of the second inning when he hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to score Corporan. Escobar got his third RBI of the game when he hit a single to center field in the top of the fifth inning, and concluded his hitting performance with a double in the top of the seventh. Escobar also scored three times for the Stars.
Carolina (4-5) will send Chris Volstad (3-3,3.42) to the mound against Donovan Hand (0-1,4.64) of Huntsville at 7:15 ET.
