Zebulon, NC --- Freddy Parejo hit a pinch-hit double in the top of the ninth to score Mat Gamel and lift the Huntsville Stars past the Carolina Mudcats 7-6 in front of 4,656 fans on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 going into the second inning, Huntsville scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead, all the runs coming with two outs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by Chris Errecart to score Mike Bell, as well as a double to left field from Alcides Escobar to score two more for the Stars.
Carolina (4-4) rallied back in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to tie the game. The first run came off of an RBI single from Cameron Maybin to score John Raynor, and the Mudcats scored two more when Andy Jenkins doubled to score Gaby Sanchez and Alberto Concepcion.
Huntsville (4-4) scored two more runs in the top half of the sixth to reclaim the lead, only to have Carolina respond with two of their own in the bottom half.
Carolina starting pitcher Rick Vanden Hurk pitched five innings, allowing nine hits and four runs.
Huntsville starting pitcher David Welch pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up eight hits and six runs, five of them earned.
Jason Shiell (W,2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for Huntsville to earn the win for Huntsville.
Juan Sandoval (S,7) came pitched the ninth inning for the Stars, retiring three Carolina hitters in order.
Tim Corcoran (L,0-1) pitched one scoreless inning in his Mudcats' debut before giving up the game winning run in the ninth.
Daniel Barone (3-1,2.38) will make the start for Carolina against Brae Wright (5-6,3.77) of Huntsville at 7:15 ET.
