Carolina Mudcats (42-35) 9, Huntsville Stars (44-33) 8

Zebulon, NC --- Manuel Mayorson went 4 for 5 including a single in the eighth inning that scored three runs to give Carolina a 9-8 lead that they would never relinquish Tuesday night in front of 5,504 fans at Five County Stadium.

Josh Johnson made the start for Carolina, pitching five and a third innings, giving up six hits and four runs, two of them earned.

Derek Miller made the start for Huntsville, but only pitched three innings for the Stars before he was relieved by Joe Bateman. Miller gave up just three hits in three scoreless innings.

The heavy scoring started for both teams, beginning with five-run sixth inning for Carolina to give the Mudcats a 6-4 lead. After a lead-off
single from Manuel Mayorson and back to back walks to Brett Hayes and Kris Harvey, Andy Jenkins hit a three-run double to right field to tie the game. Cameron Maybin later doubled to right field to score Jenkins, and the Mudcats had the lead going into the seventh.

Huntsville got one run back in the seventh before scoring three more in the eighth to take an 8-6 lead. Michael Brantley, Alcides Escobar, and Matt Gamel hit three consecutive run scoring singles against Carlos Martinez of the Mudcats. Jacob Marceaux (W, 3-1) then came on and recorded the third of the inning to stop the rally.

Carolina started the eighth inning with back to back singles by John Raynor and Maybin, and Alberto Concepcion later singled with two outs to load the bases for Carolina. Manuel Mayorson then stepped to the plate and hit a single to center to score Raynor and Maybin, and Concepcion rounded third when Huntsville centerfielder threw a ball tolwards the Carolina dugout.

Chris Mobley (S,11) came on in the ninth for Carolina and struck out the side.

Carolina (4-3) will send Rick Vanden Hurk (2-1,4.77) to the mound against David Welch (8-1,3.34) of Huntsville (3-4) at 7:15 ET at Five County Stadium.
