Chattanooga Lookouts (38-36) 6, Carolina Mudcats (41-33) 0
Chattanooga, TN --- After holding the Chattanooga Lookouts scoreless for 26 1/3 innings, the Carolina Mudcats finally succumbed to the Lookouts' bats in a 6-0 defeat at AT&T Field on Friday night.
The Mudcats (3-1) won the first three games of the second-half opening series by a 17-2 margin, including consecutive shutouts of the Lookouts (1-3) on Wednesday and Thursday, but the Lookouts cracked a scoreless tie thanks to eight straight hits against Chris Volstad to begin the inning, and the Mudcats never recovered.
James Avery (W, 4-4) threw his finest game of the season, lasting one out into the eighth inning before Derrick Lutz recorded the final five outs.
Avery allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in each of the first four innings, but utilized a double play, a caught stealing and a pair of strikeouts to continue his shutout bid. Avery, despite entering the game with a hefty ERA of 5.56, has pitched 16 1/3 against Carolina, permitting just one run.
Carolina managed eight hits in the game, including three by catcher Brett Hayes. Cameron Maybin and Manuel Mayorson each had two, while major leaguer Josh Willingham, rehabbing a back injury, was a late scratch 45 minutes prior to the game. Gaby Sanchez's team-long 13-game hitting streak also ended Friday night, going 0-2 with a pair of walks.
The six-game series continues Saturday night with Willie Glen (4-1, 1.48) opposing Chattanooga's Ben Jukich (7-2, 2.82) at 7:15 PM ET.
