Carolina Mudcats (40-32) 7, Chattanooga Lookouts (37-35) 0
Chattanooga, TN --- Chris Coghlan had four hits on his birthday, while Rick Vanden Hurk and two Carolina relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Mudcats blanked Chattanooga 7-0 at AT&T Field on Wednesday night.
Coghlan, who turned 23 on Wednesday, had three singles and a double to lead a 14-hit assault for the Mudcats (2-0), who won their second straight game to begin the second half.
Vanden Hurk (W, 2-1) meanwhile, worked six scoreless innings, fanning nine en route to his first victory since April 12th. Vanden Hurk spent nearly six weeks on the disabled list following one Double-A start after a demotion from the Marlins' big-league rotation in early April.
Matt Yourkin and Jesus Delgado combined for the final three innings of Carolina's first shutout since May 21st against Jacksonville. The shutout was the Mudcats' fifth of the season.
John Raynor, Cameron Maybin and Alberto Concepcion each had two hits as did Gaby Sanchez, who extended his hitting streak to a season-long 12 games.
Carolina scored once in the first against Jordan Smith (L, 1-3) on a grounder by Maybin, then added three runs in the third. Josh Willingham hit a groundball to Eric Eymann at third - ruled an error - that scored a run, then another Lookouts' error scored a second run. Maybin drilled a single to center to push the lead to 4-0.
The Mudcats added two in the sixth and another in the ninth to put away the Lookouts (0-2).
Daniel Barone (2-1, 2.79) starts the series' third game on Thursday night at 7:15 PM ET against Travis Wood (1-2, 7.50).
