Carolina Mudcats (39-32) 8, Chattanooga Lookouts (37-34) 2
Chattanooga, TN --- Gaby Sanchez had three hits and three RBI to lead Carolina to a second half-opening victory at AT&T Field, defeating the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-2 on Tuesday night.
Sanchez doubled in two runs in the first to extend his hitting streak to a season-tying 11 games, then singled home an insurance run as part of a four-run eighth to lift Carolina to its second win in five games in Chattanooga (37-34/0-1).
Brett Sinkbeil (W, 3-6) earned his first win since May 18th, a five-start span, working six innings, permitting two runs on seven hits. Sinkbeil utilized two double play balls to exit jams in the second and sixth innings.
Josh Willingham had two hits and two RBI, while John Raynor went 1-3 with three runs scored and his league-leading 25th stolen base.
The Mudcats (39-32/1-0) led 4-2 into the eighth when they build a two-out, none-on rally against reliever Sean Watson. Kris Harvey and Raynor drew walks ahead of a two-run double by Chris Coghlan. Willingham stroked a run-scoring hit to left, then came home on Sanchez's right-centerfield looper to cap the frame.
Carlos Martinez and Jeff Gogal each worked a perfect inning behind Sinkbeil. Jacob Marceaux walked three of four hitters in the ninth before being relieved by Jarrett Santos, who fanned consecutive hitters to nail down the victory.
Rick Vanden Hurk (1-1, 6.04) starts the series' second game on Wednesday night against Jordan Smith (1-2, 5.85) at 7:15 PM ET.
