Birmingham Barons (40-30) 3, Carolina Mudcats (38-32) 1
Zebulon, NC --- Miguel Negron hit a two-run double to right center field in the top of the eighth inning to lead Birmingham to a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats Sunday afternoon in front of 3,872 fans at Five County Stadium.
Carolina scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning when Josh Willingham grounded out to third base, scoring Chris Coghlan from third base.
Birmingham tied the game in the fifth inning when Ricardo Nanita hit a solo home run over the right field wall.
Derell McCall of Carolina pitched six innings, allowing only one run and three hits. Matt Yourkin (L,2-4) took the loss for Carolina after allowing two runs and three hits in just two innings of work.
Carlos Torres (W,7-3) of Birmingham pitched seven innings, allowing just one run off of four Carolina hits. Jon Link (S,18) earned the save by retiring three Carolina hitters in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Birmingham (40-30) finished the first half of the season in first place of the South division, along with a earning a spot in the post-season.
Carolina (39-31) finished in third place in the North division behind Huntsville and West Tenn.
Carolina will begin the second half of the season Tuesday night in Chattanooga at 7:15 ET. Brett Sinkbeil will make the start for the Mudcats.
