Carolina Mudcats (38-31) 4, Birmingham Barons (39-30) 2
Zebulon, NC --- Willie Glen pitched six scoreless innings to lead the Carolina Mudcats to their third straight win over the Birmingham Barons 4-2 before 5,567 fans at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Glen (W, 4-1), who was making his second start after spending five weeks on the disabled list, permitted just one hit, and survived a 22-minute rain delay after the fourth to lead the Mudcats (38-31) to a victory on the next-to-last day of the first half.
Carolina went ahead 2-0 in the fifth, scoring on a triple by Cameron Maybin and a sacrifice fly by Lee Mitchell. Aaron Poreda (L, 0-1) had retired the first 12 hitters while making his Double-A debut for the Barons (39-30). Poreda was the Chicago White Sox's first round pick in the 2007 draft.
Gaby Sanchez singled home a pair of runs against Poreda in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Sanchez had two hits and extended his hitting streak to nine.
Jesus Delgado surrendered two runs in the seventh, but relievers Jeff Gogal and Chris Mobley (S, 9) threw a scoreless inning apiece to close down the Mudcats victory.
Carolina closes out the first half on Sunday at 2:00 PM ET with Derell McCall (1-4, 6.91) starting against Carlos Torres (6-3, 3.79).
