Carolina Mudcats (37-31) 5, Birmingham Barons (39-29) 2
Zebulon, NC --- John Raynor singled home the tie-breaking run in the eighth, then Chris Coghlan tripled home two more insurance runs as Carolina defeated Birmingham 5-2 before a crowd of 5,258 fans at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Jarrett Santos (W, 3-1) earned the win from a Mudcats bullpen which pitched five hitless innings behind Chris Volstad's first start since May 27th.
Brett Hayes doubled home the game's first two runs in the second inning against Dewon Day, who was making his first-ever pro start after 175 major and minor league appearances.
Volstad worked four innings in his first start since his stint on the disabled list, allowing three hits and one earned run. Volstad made 60 pitches over his start, then finished his work in the bullpen after the fourth inning ended.
The Barons (39-29) tied the game against Volstad in the fourth on an error by Coghlan at third with two outs, but Carolina (37-31) won the game with three in the eighth against Fernando Hernandez. Brad Davis tripled to start the inning, then Raynor knocked a 2-2 pitch up the middle past a pulled-in infield for a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Gaby Sanchez walked ahead of Coghlan's triple to right.
Florida Marlins outfielder Josh Willingham played the first of his several-game major league rehab assignment, playing six innings in left field, going 0-2 with a walk.
The series continues Saturday night at 6:15 PM ET with Willie Glen (3-1, 1.85) starting against Aaron Poreda.
