Zebulon, NC --- Birmingham scored the first seven runs of the game, including five runs in the eighth inning before defeating Carolina 7-2 in front of 3,730 fans Wednesday night at Five County stadium.
The scoring started for Birmingham (38-27) in the third inning when Victor Mercedes hit double to left center field to score Micah Schurnstein from second. Javier Castillo followed with a single to right to score Mercedes, and Birmingham was out to a 2-0 lead.
Kyle McCulloch (W,4-5) pitched seven innings for Birmingham, allowing no runs and just six hits.
Rick Vanden Hurk (L, 1-1) pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs from Birmingham off of just three hits.
Carolina (35-31) allowed five runs to score in the eighth, allowing four hits, including a double to left field by Noah Hall to score two. Jesus Delgado was charged with all five runs in the inning, and was relieved by Carlos Martinez after only getting one out.
Carolina got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Coghlan hit a two-run double to left center to plate John Raynor and Cameron Maybin.
With the loss, coupled with Huntsville's win at Jacksonville, Carolina is now eliminated in the first half of the Southern League North division.
Carolina will send Daniel Barone (2-1,2.86) to the mound against Justin Cassel (5-3,3.80) of Birmingham on Thursday night at 7:15 ET.
