Jacksonville Suns (30-35) 9, Carolina Mudcats (35-30) 5

Zebulon, NC --- Jacksonville scored six runs in the first inning before defeating Carolina 9-5 Tuesday night in front of 1,858 at Five County Stadium.

Derell McCall (L,1-3) gave up four hits and three walks in the first inning as Jacksonville stormed out to the early lead. After a leadoff double from Adam Godwin and a walk to Juan Gonzalez, Jamie Hoffman smacked a three-run shot over the left field wall. The trouble continued for McCall when Jacksonville pitcher Jesus Castillo hit a bases loaded two-out single to centerfield that bounced over Lorenzo Scott's head and rolled all the way back to the centerfield wall. The single scored three more for
Jacksonville and the Suns were out to a 6-0 lead.

Castillo (W,4-3) pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up just one run and one hit.   The Mudcats fell four games behind first-place Huntsville with five to play in the first half.

Carolina's first run came on perhaps the most outstanding play of the season by Jacksonville second baseman Shane Justis. With runners on first and third and nobody out, John Raynor lifted a ball to the right side heading towards the stands. Justis sprinted all the away across and dove into the netting to catch the ball, and then pitched it to Mark Bellhorn while on his backside. Bellhorn threw Alberto Concepcion out at second while Kris Harvey tagged from third to score.

Carolina (35-30) scored three more runs in the eighth to cut the Jacksonville lead to three, but Jacksonville (30-35) added two insurance runs in the ninth to close things out.

Lee Mitchell went 0-3, ending his hitting streak at ten games.
Carolina will open up a five game series with Birmingham on Wednesday night at 7:15 ET. Rick Vanden Hurk (1-0,7.47) will start for Carolina against Clayton Richard (6-6,2.47) of Birmingham.
