Jacksonville Suns (29-35) 9, Carolina Mudcats (35-29) 5

Zebulon, NC --- Russell Mitchell hit two home runs over the left field wall to lead Jacksonville past Carolina 9-5 Monday night in front of 3,141 at Five County Stadium.

Carolina (35-29) took a first inning lead when Gaby Sanchez hit an RBI double to centerfield, scoring John Raynor. After Jacksonville claimed the lead in the second, Chris Coghlan hit a two-run home run over the right field wall to score Cameron Maybin and tie the game at 3-3. Coghlan homered again in the fifth, this time a solo shot to give Carolina the 4-3 lead.

Matt Yourkin (2-3) pitched two innings for Carolina, and the left-hander gave up five runs, including both homers by Mitchell. Jacksonville added an insurance run in the ninth after Jacob Marceaux walked four batters before ending the inning.   Carolina fell 3 1/2 off of the Northern Division pace with six to play in the first half.
Jacksonville's bullpen collectively allowed just one run on two hits in four innings of work. Jacksonville (29-35) has now won their first game of the five game series, and sixth overall against the Mudcats, narrowing the series to 13-6 in favor of Carolina.

Marlon Arias (6-2) earned the win for Jacksonville despite giving up four runs in five innings of work.

Mitchell homered once in the sixth and once in the seventh, plating Mark Bellhorn both times.

Bellhorn went two for three with two walks, and scored three runs for the Suns.   Maybin ended the game without an RBI, which ended a run of eight games with at least one, finishing that stretch one game shy of the Carolina franchise record of nine consecutive games by Jonathan Sweet in 1998.  Maybin's nine-game hitting streak was also snapped, while Lee Mitchell's continued to 10 thanks to a third inning double.

Jacksonville's Jesus Castillo (3-3,3.53) will make the start against Carolina's Derell McCall (1-3,6.75) on Tuesday night at 7:15 in the final game of the five game series.
