Carolina Mudcats (35-28) 3, Jacksonville Suns (28-35) 1
Zebulon, NC --- Cameron Maybin went two for three, including a first inning homerun to lead the Carolina Mudcats past the Jacksonville Suns 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Willie Glen pitched four shutout innings in a surprise start for Carolina after Ryan Tucker was sent up to make his major league debut for the Florida Marlins. Jarrett Santos (W,2-1) relieved Glen in the fifth and earned the win after giving up only one run in three innings. Jeff Gogal pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Carlos Martinez (s,3) closed the Suns out in the ninth.
Carolina (35-28) scored two insurance runs to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning off of a two run single from Manuel Mayorson to score both Maybin and Chris Coghlan.
Jacksonville (28-35) scored their only run in the seventh inning when Shane Justis hit a double to left to score Russell Martin. With Justis on second and nobody out, Coghlan made a diving catch at the edge of the infield and doubled up Justis at second to stop the brief rally that the Suns were developing.
James McDonald (L,3-2) pitched six innings for Jacksonville, allowing five hits and three runs.
Carolina has now taken the first three games of the five-game series, and will send Brett Sinkbeil (2-6, 5.82) to the mound against Marlon Arias (5-2,5.26) of Jacksonville for game four on Monday night at 7:15 ET.
