Carolina Mudcats (34-28) 7, Jacksonville Suns (28-34) 5
Zebulon, NC --- Cameron Maybin, Lee Mitchell and Kris Harvey each drove in two runs as the Carolina Mudcats rallied past the Jacksonville Suns 7-5 before 4,735 fans at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
In a game started with temperatures at 97 degrees, the Suns (28-34) took a 3-0 lead against starter Daniel Barone (W, 2-1) on a homer by Russell Mitchell in the second, then two unearned runs in the fourth. However, the Mudcats (34-28) scored three times in the fourth inning against first-time Double-A starter Cody White. Mitchell tripled against the right field wall to score two, then came home on a grounder by Manuel Mayorson.
Carolina forged ahead in the sixth with four runs against Suns reliever Brian Akin (L,2-6). Harvey punished an Akin pitch past third base for a two-run double, then three hitters later Maybin doubled to right for a 7-3 lead.
Barone worked six innings, permitting four hits and three runs, two unearned. Jesus Delgado made his first Double-A appearance since May 15th. Delgado allowed two hits and three walks over his two innings, allowing two runs. Chris Mobley (S, 7) worked a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his team-leading seventh save.
The Mudcats remain 3 1/2 games behind first-place Huntsville in the North with eight games remaining.
The middle game of the series is Sunday at 2:00 PM ET with Ryan Tucker (4-2, 1.41) starting against Jacksonville's James McDonald (3-1, 3.90).
