Carolina Mudcats (32-25) 5, Montgomery Biscuits (26-31) 3
Montgomery, AL --- Cameron Maybin homered twice and scored three runs as Carolina won its second straight game in Montgomery 5-3 over the Biscuits on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Mudcats (32-25) inched to within 2 1/2 games of the Northern Division pace, now set by Huntsville after the Stars were rained out in Chattanooga. Huntsville inherited the divisional lead when West Tenn lost to Tennessee 9-5 on Sunday afternoon. Thirteen games remain in the first half.
Maybin took out Biscuits lefthander Jake McGee (L, 5-3) in the first to centerfield and on a 3-1 pitch in the sixth inning to left-center for his first two-homer game of the season.
Ryan Tucker (W, 4-2) earned his fourth win, working five innings, permitting five hits and one run, scoring in the first inning.
Jarrett Santos worked three innings in long relief of Tucker, yielding four hits and two runs, then ceded the ball to Carlos Martinez (S, 2), who registered his second save of the season stranding the tying run at home plate in the ninth inning.
Maybin finished 3-4, scoring three runs, while Gaby Sanchez turned in another two-hit game against the Biscuits (26-31).
Daniel Barone (1-0, 1.50) starts the middle game of the series on Monday night against Wade Davis (5-3, 3.17) at 8:05 PM ET.
