| Tennessee Smokies (21-33) 7, Carolina Mudcats (30-24) 6 (10 in)
Sevierville, TN -- For the third time in four nights, Carolina blew a late-inning lead, falling 7-6 to Tennessee in 10 innings at Smokies Park on Thursday night.
The Mudcats (30-24) lost in 10 innings Monday night, losing a 5-4 lead, and stunningly fell to the last-place Smokies (21-33) on Tuesday after entering the eighth up 7-1. On Thursday night, Carolina led 6-2 into the eighth only to watch Tennessee score three in the eighth to pull within one, then tie the game in the ninth on an unearned run. The Smokies then beat Carlos Martinez (L, 1-2) for the second time in the series on a single by pinch-hitter Chris Robinson barely inside the right field line with two outs in the 10th.
The Mudcats remained three games behind first place West Tenn, which lost Thursday night. Huntsville moved into a tie with the Diamond Jaxx with 16 games remaining in the first half.
Carolina jumped out 5-0 after two innings thanks to a three-run homer by Gaby Sanchez and a solo homer by Alberto Concepcion in the first. Lorenzo Scott tripled home John Raynor in the second to build the lead for Brett Sinkbeil.
Sinkbeil allowed two runs on four hits in the ffith, but departed the game leadig 5-2. Jeff Gogal permitted three runs, but only one earned in the eighth as the Smokies started their rally. In the ninth, an error on first baseman Andy Jenkins ignited the game-tying inning against closer Chris Mobley. Jenkins, handling a grounder wide of first, flipped behind Mobley covering first to allow Tyler Colvin to reach. A wild pitch moved him ahead, then a sacrifice took Colvin to third. Doug Deeds hit a tying sacrifice fly to left.
Martinez permitted a single to start the 10th by Matt Matulia, who was bunted to second and with two outs, scored on Robinson's single.
John Raynor went 3-6, doubling and scoring two runs. Scott was 2-4, drawing two walks and stole three bases. Sanchez and Concepcion, who each homered, finished with two extra base hits.
Sinkbeil worked six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs.
Derell McCall (1-1, 3.75) starts the series finale on Friday night against Mitch Atkins (3-5, 4.35) at 7:15 PM ET.
