Sevierville, TN --- Daniel Barone pitched six shutout innings, while Chris Coghlan drove in three runs as Carolina defeated Tennessee 8-1 at Smokies Park on Wednesday night.
Barone (W, 1-0), who allowed a leadoff single in the first, retired 16 consecutive Smokies hitters until permitting a pinch-single to Matt Matulia in the sixth. Carolina (30-23) built a 3-0 lead against Jeff Samardzija (L, 3-5) in the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Andy Jenkins and an RBI-double by Manuel Mayorson.
The Mudcats closed to within three games of first-place West Tenn with 17 to play in the first half.
Carolina added three runs against reliever Jesse Estrada in the eighth thanks to six straight hitters reaching with two outs, including run-chasing hits by Coghlan, Gaby Sanchez and Jenkins. Coghlan added a two-run chopper in the ninth to cap the Mudcats' first win of the series.
Tim Wood and Matt Yourkin combined for the final three innings, with Yourkin pitching 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
Samardzija worked six innings for Tennessee (20-33), allowing just two hits and three runs.
Brett Sinkbeil (2-5, 5.31) starts on Thurdsay night against Jeff Russell (2-0, 2.84) at 7:15 PM ET.
