Tennessee Smokies (20-32) 8, Carolina Mudcats (29-23) 7

Sevierville, TN --- The Tennessee Smokies roared from a six-run deficit in the eighth inning to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 8-7 at Smokies Park on Tuesday night.

The Mudcats (29-23), who entered the eighth inning after a strong seven-inning start from Chris Volstad leading 7-1, saw the bullpen meltdown by issuing six walks to the 16 batters Jacob Marceaux and Carlos Martinez (L, 1-1) faced.  Marceaux's first 10 pitches were balls to begin the eighth, then allowed a run-scoring double to right by Matt Craig.  After an out was recorded, Marceaux issued another walk, then an RBI-single by Steve Clevenger to draw the Smokies (20-32) to within 7-3.  Martinez relieved Marceaux, but had his first pitch clubbed over the right field wall by Kyle Reynolds for a game-tying grand slam.

In the last of the ninth, Martinez walked the leadoff hitter, then following a sacrifice to move Matt Camp to second, Martinez intentionally walked Craig.  Doug Deeds drilled a groundball to Albert Concepcion at first base for the second out, but Clevenger singled through the right side on a 1-1 pitch to score Camp and start the Smokies' celebration.

With the disheartening loss the Mudcats fell four games behind first-place West Tenn with 18 to play in the first half.

Volstad's terrific start was wasted despite a large lead.  Carolina scored a second inning run on a grounder by Kris Harvey, then added four runs against starter Tanner Watson in the third, an rally that began with two outs and none on.  Concepcion and Brett Hayes contributed run-scoring singles, while a two-run error by second baseman Nate Spears capped the scoring.  Volstad chopped a two-run hit to center in the fifth to push the advantage to 7-1.

Carolina had 11 hits in the game, all singles.  Lorenzo Scot went 3-5 to lead the club.

Daniel Barone (0-0, 3.00) starts the middle game of the series on Wednesday night against Jeff Samardzija (3-4,6.10) at 7:15 PM ET.
