Jacksonville Suns (23-27) 7, Carolina Mudcats (29-21) 2
Zebulon, NC --- The Jacksonville Suns scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Jacksonville (23-27) started the game with four consecutive hits against Carolina starting pitcher Derell McCall. Adam Godwin hit the game’s first pitch for a double over Mudcats’ right fielder Kris Harvey. Singles followed by James Tomlin and Greg Jacobs before Mark Bellhorn hit a run scoring double to right center field. Rene Rivera hit a single to right field to score Jacobs for the third and final run of the inning.
Carolina (29-21) scored one in the third, and picked up their second and final run in the fourth off of a solo home run from Andy Jenkins.
Jacksonville picked up some insurance in the seventh inning when Carolina pitcher Tim Wood gave up three runs on two walks and two hits in his Double-A debut. Wood surrendered one more run in the eighth after Russell Mitchell hit a lead-off double to right field.
Jacksonville starting pitcher Jesus Castillo (W, 3-2) picked up the win after giving up two runs on nine hits during six innings of work. McCall (L, 1-1) took the loss after giving up the three early runs. McCall gave up three runs on five hits in six innings of work. McCall calmed down in innings two through six as he allowed no hits and only one Jacksonville base runner.
Brent Leach (s, 3) picked up the save after pitching three shutout innings and surrendering only one hit.
The Mudcats open their longest road trip of the season on Monday night against the Tennessee Smokies.
Ryan Tucker (3-2, 0.93) starts the first of 10 games in 10 days at 7:15 PM ET.
