Carolina Mudcats (29-20) 9, Jacksonville Suns (22-27) 8 (10 inn)
Zebulon, NC --- Chris Coghlan slammed a walk-off double off of the centerfield wall to score Cameron Maybin in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Carolina Mudcats over the Jacksonville Suns 9-8 before a season-high 6,175 at Five County Stadium.
Carolina (29-20) scored the game’s first seven runs in the first two innings before Jacksonville (22-27) stormed back to force the extra inning of play. Carolina’s bats were hot early as they got seven of their 12 hits in the first two innings, as John Raynor singled twice and Lee Mitchell hit a double to center field to bring in two.
Brett Sinkbeil pitched six innings, allowing two runs and eight hits. Matt Yourkin relieved him in the seventh, allowing two hits and three runs, bringing the margin to 8-5. The turning point in the inning was win Mark Bellhorn hit a two-out bloop double to left and Mudcats’ left fielder Andy Jenkins lost the ball in the sky. The inning continued and Jacksonville added the three runs. Jacob Marceaux entered the game in the eighth, surrendering three hits, and allowing the Suns to trim the lead to 8-7 going into the ninth. Chris Mobley retired the first two hitters in the ninth before Aldolfo Gonzalez hit a two-out 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a game-tying home run with two outs. The homer was the first of the season for Gonzalez.
Mobley stayed in the game to pitch the tenth, getting out of a jam with a runner on second with only one out. Mobley (W,3-0) earned the win after Maybin scored in the tenth.
Brian Akin (L,1-5) took the loss, giving up only one hit but walking three hitters in one and a third innigs of work.
Carolina will send Derell McCall (1-0,3.00) to the mound against Jesus Castillo (2-2,3.66) of Jacksonville Sunday at 2:00 ET.
