Carolina Mudcats (28-20) 3, Jacksonville Suns (22-26) 2
Zebulon, NC --- Gaby Sanchez broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning as he drove a one out solo shot over the left field wall to lift Carolina to a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville before 5,871 fans at Five County Stadium.
Sanchez was a patient hitter all night, as he drew two walks in the first and fifth innings, but he wasted no time in the eighth as he swung on Danny Muegge’s first pitch of the at bat for a game-winning home run.
Carolina (28-20) scored their first two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead against Jacksonville starting pitcher James McDonald. After Manuel Mayorson was hit by a pitch and starting pitcher Daniel Barone singled to right, Cameron Maybin hit a two-out triple off of the right field wall to score both runners.
Jacksonville (22-26) did its damage in the top half of the fourth against Daniel Barone. Mark Bellhorn started things off with a double to left-center, followed by a single to right from Russell Mitchell. Jamie Hoffman drove Bellhorn in with a single to right and Mitchell scored Jacksonville’s final run when Rene Rivera doubled to right-center field.
Jeff Gogal entered the game for the Carolina in the fifth when Barone was pulled after four innings of work. Gogal pitched three shutout innings before being relieved by Carlos Martinez. Martinez (1-0) got the win after a shaky eighth inning where he walked the lead off batter, Dejesus, and fell behind in the count 3-0 to Jacobs. He worked his way out of the jam to retire Jacobs, Bellhorn, and Mitchell to end the inning.
Danny Muegge (0-2) retired the first seven hitters that faced him in relief before Sanchez hit the game-winning home run. Muegge suffered the loss despite only allowing one hit in three innings.
Chris Mobley (S,5) earned his fifth save by striking out the side in the top half of the ninth.
The Carolina Mudcats will face the Jacksonville Suns in the fourth game of their five game series at 6:15 ET. Brett Sinkbeil (2-5,5.57) will start for Carolina against Marlon Arias (4-2,3.86) of Jacksonville.
