Zebulon, NC --- Ryan Tucker ran his scoreless string to 19 consecutive innings against the Jacksonville Suns while Lorenzo Scott went 4-4 with a homer as Carolina won its third straight game 5-0 over the Suns in the series opener on Wednesday night.
Tucker, who beat the Suns (21-25) twice in April, allowed two hits and fanned six over six innings while lowering his ERA to a league-best 0.93.
With the victory, Carolina closed to within 3 1/2 games of first-place Huntsville, which was hosting Birmingham in its series opener.
Meanwhile, Scott homered to leadoff the third against Suns starter Mario Alvarez (L, 1-5), then singled home an insurance run in the eighth to cap a perfect night. Scott had three singles and the home run, along with a walk in the fourth inning and a stolen base.
Lee Mitchell was 2-3 with a run-scoring double in the third inning. Lee's younger brother Russell also doubled in the game in the Suns' fifth inning.
Matt Yourkin pitched two scoreless innings while Carlos Martinez pitched a perfect ninth to preserve Carolina's (27-19) victory.
In what could be the best starting pitching match-up in the minors in 2008, Carolina sends Chris Volstad (3-1, 2.79) starts against the Suns Clayton Kershaw (0-3, 2.34) at 7:15 PM ET on Thursday night.
