Carolina Mudcats (25-19) 8, Huntsville Stars (30-14) 3
Huntsville, AL --- Chris Coghlan had three hits including his second home run of the season to lead the Carolina Mudcats past first-place Huntsville 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium.
Coghlan singled home John Raynor in the first, then capped his afternoon with a solo blast against reliever Juan Sandoval in the ninth as Carolina (25-19) clawed to within five games of the Northern Division-leading Stars (30-14).
Brett Sinkbeil (W, 2-5) ended a six-start winless streak by scattering nine hits over 6 1/3 innings en route to his second victory.
The Mudcats scored three times in the first and twice more in the second against Stars starter Brae Wright (L, 1-5), who remained without a victory since his Double-A debut on April 6th.
Carolina knocked out 13 hits in the victory with Raynor collecting two doubles and Lee Mitchell contributing three singles. Only Manuel Mayorson, who entered the game as the team's leading hitter, was hitless despite driving in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.
Carolina closes out its series against the Stars on Monday afternoon at 1:05 PM ET with Derell McCall (0-0, 0.00) making his first Double-A start of his career against Mike Jones. The Mudcats return home Wednesday night against the Jacksonville Suns at 7:15 PM ET.
