Huntsville Stars (30-13) 12, Carolina Mudcats (24-19) 1

Huntsville, AL --- Five two-out runs in the fifth proved decisive as the first-place Huntsville Stars hammered the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday afternoon 12-1 at Joe Davis Stadium.

With the game tied 1-1, Stars starting pitcher David Welch (W, 6-1) pulled a Marc Lamacchia (L, 0-2) fastball over the third base bag for a two-run double.  Two batters later, reliever Jeff Gogal served up a three-run homer to Alcides Escobar as the Stars (30-13) roared to a 6-1 lead.  The Mudcats (24-19) would permit two more runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth as Huntsville won for the first time in three games in the series.

Carolina had two early chances to pull away against Welch.  The Mudcats filled the bases in the first, but Lee Mitchell drove a grounder to Escobar at short to commence a 6-4-3 double play.  In the second, Carolina took a 1-0 lead on a Kris Harvey double to left, but Andy Jenkins was thrown out trying to score from first base.  With Harvey at third, Lamacchia hit a grounder to first, on which Michael Brantley fired home to get Harvey attempting to score.

The Stars hit three homers against Gogal, including consecutive home runs in the fifth on two pitches.

Alberto Concepcion, who started the first seven innings behind the plate, made his professional pitching debut, but walked the first four hitters he faced in the eighth before retiring the next three.

John Raynor had three of Carolina's eight hits, while Gaby Sanchez was 2-3 with a walk.

Lamacchia worked 3 2/3 innings, permitting four hits and four runs.  Gogal yielded six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.  Darell McCall, who will make his first Double-A start on Monday afternoon, was summoned in for a perfect seventh inning.

Carolina, now six games behind Huntsville in the Northern Division, continues its five-game series Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET with Brett Sinkbeil (1-5, 6.15) starting against Brae Wright (1-4, 4.17).
