Huntsville, AL --- Kris Harvey hit his third home run in five games to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning to lead the Carolina Mudcats past the first-place Huntsville Stars 5-4 on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium.
Harvey, who hit all 12 home runs in 2007 in the second half at High-A Jupiter, drilled a 1-1 changeup from reliever Robert Hinton (L, 2-1) over the left field wall to snap a tie, and Chris Mobley (S, 3) closed out the game in the ninth despite allowing a solo homer as the Mudcats (24-18) moved to within five games of the Northern Division-leading Stars (29-13).
Carolina struck in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Lee Mitchell, but could not break the game open against Stars lefty Derek Miller. Andy Jenkins bounced to the mound, resulting in a force at home and Brett Hayes lined out.
The Stars tied the game in the first against Chris Volstad, then went ahead with a run in the second and fourth. Volstad, who had worked seven-plus innings in his last five outings, left the game after 5 2/3 innings, permitting seven hits and five walks.
The Mudcats tied the game in the sixth against Miller, capitalizing on two walks. Miller issued passes to John Raynor and Cameron Maybin, sandwiched around a popout by Manuel Mayorson. Following a double steal, Gaby Sanchez delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right, followed by a game-tying single by Mitchell.
Harvey's homer came after a two-out infield single by Hayes. Carolina swiped five bases, matching a season high. Matt Yourkin (W, 2-2) earned the victory by pitching 2 1/2 shutout innings.
Carolina sends Marc Lamacchia to the mound on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET against David Welch in the middle game of the series.
