Zebulon, NC --- Brett Hayes clubbed a two-strike pitch in the bottom of the ninth for a home run to lift Carolina past the Chattanooga Lookouts 4-3 at Five County Stadium on Mother's Day.
Hayes, who came to the plate 0-3, swatted a pitch from Josh Roenicke (L, 4-2) over the left field wall for the Mudcats' third home run of the game to even the series at one game apiece.
Lorenzo Scott and Cameron Maybin hit back to back homers in the first against Ramon Ramirez to give Carolina (21-16) a 2-1 lead. Lee Mitchell doubled home Chris Coghlan for the third run in the inning.
The Lookouts (19-18) scored a run in the first against Chris Volstad on a two-out single by Tonys Gutierrez. Chattanooga closed to within 3-2 in the second on a double by Jerry Gil. However, Volstad pitched solidly over the next five innings and surrendered the mound in the eighth to Jeff Gogal with a 3-2 advantage.
Gogal walked the leadoff hitter in the eighth, and following a sacrifice, Chris Mobley (W, 1-0) entered to exit the inning. Mobley began the ninth with the one-run lead, but allowed a single to Eric Eymann, who advanced to second on a groundout. Pinch-hitter Sean Henry drooped a single to right-center to tie the game.
Roenicke, who saved Friday's Lookouts win, began the last of the ninth by retiring Manuel Mayorson on a grounder to short before jumping ahead of Hayes two strikes.
Each of the nine Carolina starters had at least one hit, including a pair of doubles by Mayorson.
Carolina sends Aaron Thompson in the middle game of the series on Monday night against Daryl Thompson at 7:15 PM ET.
