Zebulon, NC -- It was a game of missed opportunities that cost the Carolina Mudcats in their series opener against the Chattanooga Lookouts, falling 1-0 before 5,427 fans at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
The Mudcats (20-16) failed to capitalize on two bases-loaded situations, and could not cash in on a first-and-third, one-out chance en route to their fourth shutout loss of the season.
In the second inning, pitcher Ryan Tucker (L, 2-2) bounced into a 3-2-1 double play to end the inning, while in the sixth, after filling the bases with none out against Lookouts starter Sam Lecure (W, 2-2), Derrik Lutz entered to induce a popout by Brad Davis, then a hard double-play grounder to short from Kris Harvey. In the third, Carolina had runners at first and third with out out, but also failed to score. In all, the Mudcats stranded 10 baserunners, six in scoring position.
Tucker permitted just four hits over six innings, but the game's only run in the fifth on consecutive extra-base hits by BJ Szymanski and Criag Tatum. That run was Tucker's first allowed in 27 innings, but preserved his second-best league ERA at 0.97 through eight starts.
The loss was Carolina's fifth in six games against Chattanooga.
Chris Volstad (3-1, 2.58) starts Sunday at 2:00 PM ET against Chattanooga's Ramon Ramirez (2-1, 3.58).
