Carolina Mudcats (20-15) 6, Jacksonville Suns (16-19) 3
Jacksonville, FL --- Manuel Mayorson doubled twice and had three hits to lead the Carolina Mudcats past the Jacksonville Suns 6-3 at the Baseball Grounds before 9,489 fans on Friday night.
The Mudcats (20-15) claimed the series 3-2 thanks to a game during which they never trailed. Gaby Sanchez delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the first for a 1-0 lead. After the Suns (16-19) tied the game in the bottom half, Carolina pushed ahead on a grounder by Kris Harvey in the fourth.
Jacksonville tied the score in the fourth inning before the Mudcats went ahead for good in the sixth. Sanchez opened the sixth with a single, stole second and took third on a grounder to the right side by Lee Mitchell. Sanchez then scored the tie-breaking run on a passed ball by Lucas May. Harvey then doubled and scored on the second of Mayorson's three hits in the game.
The Mudcats scored twice in the ninth to put the game away thanks to a wild picth from Zach Hammes and a two-out single by Chris Coghlan to bring home John Raynor.
Matt Lamacchia went three innings in his Double-A debut for the Mudcats, allowing three hits and two runs. Jacob Marceaux (W, 2-1) notched the win with three scoreless innings, while Matt Yourkin and Chris Mobley collaborated on the final three innings.
The Mudcats have taken seven of 10 games with the Suns, and will see Jacksonville another 10 times before the end of the first half, with all of those games at Five County Stadium.
Carolina returns home Saturday night against the Chattanooga Lookouts at 6:15 PM ET. Ryan Tucker (2-1, 0.89) will make the start in the opener of five.
