Jacksonville, FL --- Lucas May singled in the game's first run to break a 0-0 tie in the eighth as the Jacksonville Suns shutout the Carolina Mudcats 2-0 on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds.
Chris Volstad (L, 3-1) and Jason McDonald battled to a scoreless deadlock through seven innings before the Suns (15-17) went to the bullpen. The Mudcats (18-14) put two baserunners on against Tanyon Sturtze (W, 1-1), but could not break the tie.
Volstad came out for the eighth, and surrendered a first-pitch single to Ivan DeJesus, followed by a sacrifice bunt. Volstad, who walked seven in the game, walked Greg Jacobs on four pitches, but was allowed to stay in to face May, who entered the game hitting .325. On an 0-2 pitch, May muscled a single over shortstop to score DeJesus. Following an intentional walk, Chris Mobley allowed a sacrifice fly to Jamie Hoffman for a 2-0 lead.
McDonald worked seven scoreless innings, striking out nine with no walks. He was lifted for a seventh inning pinch-hitter. Volstad retired McDonald twice in the game with two outs and the bases loaded.
Carolina had seven hits, including a leadoff double by Cameron Maybin in the fourth inning, but could not break through.
The Mudcats fell four games behind first place West Tenn in the Northern Division. Aaron Thompson will start the series' third game on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 PM ET against Danny Muegge.
