West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (20-10) 10, Carolina Mudcats (17-13) 9
Zebulon, NC --- The Carolina Mudcats nearly pulled off a seven-run rally in the homestand's final three innings but fell one run shy against the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, dropping a 10-9 decision at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Trailing 8-1 in the seventh is when the Mudcats (17-13) began making their comeback. Five two-out runs in the inning highlighted by a two-run single from Lee Mitchell, a two-run double by Manuel Mayorson and an RBI-single from Kris Harvey brought the Mudcats to within 8-6. Mike Saunders hit a two-run homer in the eighth against Matt Yourkin to rebuild the lead to 10-6, but Carolina did not roll. The Mudcats scored three times in the ninth inning sparked by a two-run single to right by Chris Coghlan, but three pitches after Cameron Maybin sliced a long foul in front of the right field wall, Mumba Rivera (S, 3) struck out the Marlins' top prospect to end the comeback bid.
West Tenn (20-10) took four of five from Carolina, which has now lost eight of 10.
Brett Sinkbeil (L, 1-3) allowed a season-high 10 hits and seven runs en route to the loss, while West Tenn starter Ryan Ketchner (W, 2-0) notched the win over 6 2/3 innings despite issuing six walks and four hits.
Carolina had 14 hits, one shy of its season high, including three apiece from Mayorson (3-5, 2r, 2-2b, 2rbi, sb) and Lorenzo Scott (3-4, 2r, 2b, rbi, w). Maybin was 1-3 with three walks, while Harvey's seventh-inning single snapped an 0-38 slump.
