West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (17-10) 4, Carolina Mudcats (17-10) 3

Zebulon, NC --- UNC product Marshall Hubbard singled home the tie-breaking runs in the ninth inning to lead the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx past the Carolina Mudcats 4-3 at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.

Hubbard hopped a single into right field against Carolina reliever Matt Yourkin (L, 0-2) with one out to lift the Diamond Jaxx (17-10 into a second place tie with the Mudcats (17-10).  With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Jon Nelson started the rally by reaching on catcher's interference.  One out later, Yourkin issued a pair of walks to fill the bases ahead of Hubbard's base hit.

The Mudcats threatened against West Tenn closer Mumba Rivera (S, 2) in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a single by Lorenzo Scott, scoring Brad Davis from third base.  Davis had doubled high off the left field wall with one out and taken third on a two-out single by Cameron Maybin.  Chris Coghlan, who had two RBI-hits in the game, struck out against Rivera to end the game.

With the loss, Carolina fell into a second-place tie, 1 1/2 games behind Huntsville in the Northern Division.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against former Mudcat Rich Dorman on a double up the right-centerfield gap by Coghlan.  Starter Ryan Tucker maintained that lead through his 5 2/3 innings, with Jesus Delgado preserving the advantage through the seventh.  Both starting pitchers dealt with a shrunken strike zone, resulting in 11 combined walks.

West Tenn tied the game 1-1 in the eighth against Carlos Martinez.  Shawn Garrett singled to right, followed by Hubbard's first hit also to right, which was juggled by Kris Harvey for an error, allowing Garrett to take third.  Harvey then pumped a wild throw toward third past three defenders into the bullpen to score Garrett.  Luis Oliveros then singled off of Yourkin's glove to put the Diamond Jaxx ahead 2-1.

Carolina evened the game in the last of the eighth against Brodie Downs (W, 2-0).  Lorenzo Scott walked to start the inning, took second on a wild pickoff throw, then scored on a single to center by Coghlan.  But with runners at first and second, Harvey hit into a line drive double play at second base.

Dorman, who spent 2007 as his only year in the Florida organization, fanned 11 over 6 2/3 innings.

Tucker, who entered the game with a 1.30 ERA, lowered it to 1.08, thanks to four earned runs over his 33 1/3 innings this season.

Each team managed just six hits, with Coghlan going 2-5 with two RBI and Maybin also going 2-5.  Maybin snapped an 0-25 with his two hits.  Harvey went 0-4, and is now hitless in 31 straight at-bats.

Aaron Thompson (0-1, 2.84) starts Thursday night against West Tenn's Justin Thomas (0-2, 3.91) at 7:15 PM ET.
