Chattanooga, TN --- Shaun Cumberland's leadoff homer in the first inning held up as the Chattanooga Lookouts swept a pair from the Carolina Mudcats at AT&T Field on Monday night.
After claiming Sunday's rain-suspended game 6-4, the Lookouts' (15-10) right fielder turned on a 3-2 pitch from Brett Sinkbeil, pounding his fourth home run of the season to put Carolina (16-9) behind 1-0. The Mudcats had ample chances against Lookouts starter Ben Jukich (W, 1-1), opening up six of his seven innings with hits, but could not manage the clutch hit.
Pinch-hitter Andrew Jenkins doubled to open the seventh inning, but John Raynor popped out trying to sacrifice. First baseman Tonys Gutierrez then dived to stop a grounder by Chris Coghlan, turning that into the second out, and after a pitching change brought in the Lookouts' closer Josh Roenicke, Cameron Maybin fanned on a 1-2 fastball to end the game. Maybin finished the five-game set 0-15.
With the two losses, Carolina returns home Tuesday night against West Tenn out of first place for the first time this season. Huntsville took two from Jacksonville on Monday, and has now won six straight to overtake the Northern Division lead by a game over both the Mudcats and Diamond Jaxx. Carolina entered the five-game set with Chattanooga three games up in the division.
Chris Volstad (2-0) starts Tuesday night's opener against the Diamond Jaxx against Doug Fister (3-0) at 7:15 PM ET.
