Chattanooga Lookouts (13-10) 5, Carolina Mudcats (16-7) 4
Chattanooga, TN --- A single by Jose Castro with two outs in the eighth snapped a 4-4 tie as Chattanooga defeated Carolina 5-4 on Saturday night at AT&T Field, shrinking Carolina's Northern Division lead to one game over Huntsville and West Tenn.
Castro singled off of reliever Matt Yourkin (L, 0-1) to score pinch-runner Shaun Cumberland from third base as the Lookouts (13-10) beat the Mudcats (16-7) for the second time in three games. Craig Tatum started the eighth by walking, then was lifted for Cumberland. Drew Anderson sacrificed Cumberland to second, then stole third ahead of Castro's liner to center.
Carolina rallied from 2-0 down to tie by the fifth and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a two-run blast by Gaby Sanchez. Chris Coghlan singled home John Raynor in the third to trim the deficit to 2-1, then a double by Manuel Mayorson scored Brad Davis in the fourth to tie the game.
BJ Szymanski homered twice for Chattanooga, with Mike Griffin hitting his first of the season. Aaron Thompson worked five innings, allowing six hits and three runs, including two solo homers. Carlos Martinez permitted the game-tying homer to Szymanski in the sixth.
Mayorson had two of Carolina's five hits.
The series continues Sunday at 2:15 with Jarrett Santos (0-0, 9.00) starting against James Avery (0-0, 6.98).
