Chattanooga Lookouts (12-9) 3, Carolina Mudcats (15-6) 2
Chattanooga, TN --- Cody Straight belted a game-winning home run in the last of the ninth to culminate a two-run rally, sending Chattanooga to a 3-2 series opening victory over the Carolina Mudcats at AT&T Field.
The Lookouts (12-9) started the ninth trailing 2-1 against Carolina closer Todd Doolittle (L, 1-1), who had not permitted a run all season. A disputed first batter set up the entire inning, when Mike Griffin was awarded first base after being hit by a Doolittle pitch. Mudcats manager Matt Raleigh argued the call, alleging that the pitch hit the knob of Griffin's bat, but after the umpires conferred, the original call stood. Raleigh continued to argue, and was ejected by first-base umpire Art Thigpen, the crew chief. Tonys Gutierrez sacrificed Griffin to second, before a Doolittle wild pitch ricocheted down the first base line near the Lookouts dugout scoring Griffin all the way from second base to tie the game. Strait's homer easily cleared the left-centerfield wall on a 3-2 offering from Doolittle.
Carolina (15-6), which entered the game with the minors' sixth-best record, took a 2-1 lead in the eighth when John Raynor tripled home Lorenzo Scott from third base with no outs, but the Mudcats could not plate Raynor with the insurance run. Chris Coghlan grounded to second, Cameron Maybin struck out and Lee Mitchell looped out to short.
Chris Volstad took his third consecutive no-decision despite pitching brilliantly. Volstad retired the first nine batters he faced before seeing all three baserunners of his outing reach in the fourth. Gutierrez dropped a soft single to left to score Shaun Cumberland with two outs for a 1-0 Chattanooga lead.
However, Volstad socked his first pro homer in the fifth against Chattanooga starter Sam LeCure with two outs, high against the left field scoreboard to tie the game 1-1.
The series continues Tuesday night with Ryan Tucker (1-1, 1.64) starting opposite Chattanooga's Daryl Thompson (2-0, 0.76) at 7:15 PM ET.
