Carolina Mudcats (15-5) 7, Tennessee Smokies (9-11) 3
Zebulon, NC --- Carolina scored five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Tennessee Smokies 7-3 at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.
Andrew Jenkins tied the game with a two-out single off of the glove of a diving Tyler Colvin in centerfield to score Cameron Maybin. A single and a pair of walks followed to force in the tie-breaking run to put Carolina (15-5) ahead 4-3. A passed ball pushed across another, on the heels of a two-run, pinch-single from Alberto Concepcion to cap the five-run inning.
Jeff Gogal (W, 2-0) earned the victory, pitching a scoreless eighth inning.
Brett Sinkbeil took a no-decision despite pitching 6 2/3 innings of six-hit baseball.
Tennessee (9-11) moved ahead 1-0 in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Harvey, but the Mudcats claimed their first lead on a two-run single by John Raynor in the fifth against starter Tanner Watson.
The Smokies evened the game in the sixth on a base hit by Doug Deeds, then took their second one-run lead of the contest in the seventh on a two-out bunt single by Matt Camp, who entered that at-bat 0-14 in the series.
The Mudcats took the series 4-1 over Tennessee and maintained their three-game lead in the North over both West Tenn and Huntsville.
Chris Volstad (2-0, 3.38) is slated to start the series opener against Chattanooga Thursday night at 7:15 PM ET at AT&T Field.
