Carolina Mudcats (14-5) 4, Tennessee Smokies (9-10) 3
Zebulon, NC --- Gaby Sanchez scored the winning run thanks to a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth as Carolina edged the Tennessee Smokies 4-3 at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
Tied 3-3 in the last of the ninth, Smokies reliever Jesse Estrada (L, 2-2) issued a pair of walks ahead of a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt attempt by Manuel Mayorson. Estrada fielded and threw wide of the mark at third base, allowing Sanchez to get up and score the series-clinching run.
The Mudcats' (14-5) bullpen was outstanding in the victory after Joe Simokaitis tied the game in the fifth against starter Willie Glen with a three-run homer. Matt Yourkin pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief, fanning five. Jesus Delgado (W, 2-0) worked two scoreless, and pitched through a bases loaded, one-out jam in the eighth to preserve the tie.
Carolina took a 3-0 lead after two innings against Tennessee (9-10) starter Mitch Atkins when Andrew Jenkins drilled a two-run homer in the second after Alberto Concepcion reached on an error. In the first, Cameron Maybin tripled off the centerfield wall, then scored on a grounder by Chris Coghlan.
Glen worked 4 1/3 innings, permitting six hits and two walks.
The Mudcats conclude their five-game series and homestand on Wednesday night with Brett Sinkbeil (1-1, 3.94) starting opposite Tanner Watson (0-0, 4.15) at 7:15 PM ET.
