Carolina Mudcats (13-4) 4, Tennessee Smokies (8-9) 1
Zebulon, NC --- Andrew Jenkins doubled in two runs as part of a four-run seventh inning to lift Carolina to its fourth straight victory, 4-1 over the Tennessee Smokies before 4,888 fans at Five County Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 into the seventh against the Chicago Cubs' heralded prospect Jeff Samardzija (L, 2-1), the Mudcats (13-4) filled the bases with nobody out thanks to a double by Gaby Sanchez, a single from Alberto Concepcion and a walk. Samardzija was relieved by former Cubs starting pitcher Juan Mateo, who promptly walked Brad Davis on four pitches to force in the tying run. After a force out at home plate, Jenkins swatted a 1-1 pitch into the right field corner to score two runs. Mateo then issued two more walks to force in a fourth run to give Carolina a 4-1 advantage.
Jeff Gogal (W, 1-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Ryan Tucker. Tucker struck out a season-high nine batters and walked only one. The Smokies (8-9) had just three hits against Tucker, who lowered his ERA to 1.64.
Sanchez had two of Carolina's seven hits, including his sixth double of the season.
Todd Doolittle (S, 6) faced the tying run twice in the ninth before striking out pinch-hitter Ryan Harvey to end the inning.
Four Carolina pitchers fanned 15 Tennessee hitters collectively. The Mudcats, winners of four straight and 10 of 12, maintained their two game lead over second place Huntsville in the North.
Aaron Thompson (0-1, 2.35) starts Monday night at 7:15 PM ET against Donnie Veal (0-0, 4.50).
