Carolina Mudcats (12-4) 5, Tennessee Smokies (8-8) 4
Zebulon, NC --- Cameron Maybin hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift Carolina past the Tennessee Smokies 5-4 in the series opener at Five County Stadium.
Maybin, batting for Lorenzo Scott with the tying run at third base, walloped the first pitch from Ed Campusano (L, 1-1) over the centerfield wall, sending the Mudcats into a state of euphoria.
The ninth inning rally started with a pinch-hit double by Alberto Concepcion, who was lifted by Chris Coghlan to pinch-run. Coghlan took third on a flyball by John Raynor ahead of Maybin's third home run of the season.
Todd Doolittle (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief for the Mudcats. Chris Volstad allowed four runs over a season-high seven innings, striking out a season-high nine batters. Three of the runs permitted by Volstad scored with two outs in the first inning.
Tennessee (8-8) reclaimed a three-run lead thanks to a run-scoring double by Tyler Colvin in the third, but was blanked the rest of the game by the league's best pitching staff.
Raynor scored three of Carolina's (12-4) five runs, reaching on an error in the first and scoring on a grounder by Andrew Jenkins. Raynor walked to begin the fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gaby Sanchez, then Raynor belted his second home run in as many nights in the seventh against reliever Jesse Estrada.
Carolina has won nine of its past 11 games, and continues its homestand against the Smokies Sunday at 2:00 PM. Ryan Tucker (1-1, 1.69) will oppose Jeff Samarzija (2-0, 1.59).
