Carolina Mudcats (11-4) 9, Jacksonville Suns (5-10) 5

Jacksonville, FL --- The Carolina Mudcats hit their third grand slam in a week as part of a six-run seventh inning sending the Mudcats to a 9-5 victory over the Jacksonville Suns before 11,837 fans at the Baseball Grounds on Saturday night.

John Raynor drilled a 1-0 pitch from reliever Zach Hammes over the left-centerfield wall for his first Double-A home run, joining Lee Mitchell and Andrew Jenkins who hit grand slams last weekend at Five County Stadium.  The Mudcats (11-4) had lost a 3-0 lead as the Suns (5-10) tied the game against Brett Sinkbeil with a run in the fifth.  However, a bunt single by Brett Hayes began the uprising, followed by a walk and an error to fill the bases.  Jenkins delivered the tie-breaking single to center for a 4-3 lead ahead of Raynor's homer.

Carolina maintained its two-game lead in the North over Huntsville, which won a rain-shortened 3-2 decision over Chattanooga.  Tennessee fell from a second-place tie with an 8-5 loss to Montgomery.

Jesus Delgado (W, 1-0) notched the victory in relief of Sinkbeil, working three perfect innings with four strikeouts.  Sinkbeil allowed seven hits over five innings and three earned runs.

The Suns attempted to make the game interesting in the ninth against reliever Jacob Marceaux, as the first four batters reached, including a bases-loaded walk to Adolfo Gonzalez to cut the lead to 9-4.  However, after falling behind Adam Godwin 3-1, Marceaux induced a double-play ball on a 3-2 pitch to quell the threat.  Ivan DeJesus grounded out to end the game.

The Mudcats finished the Suns series taking four of five, and now have won eight games of their last 10.

Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.65) starts the opener against Tennessee Saturday night at Five County Stadium against Justin Berg (0-3, 5.74).  First pitch will occur at 6:15 PM ET.
