Carolina Mudcats (8-3) 6, Jacksonville Suns (4-7) 3

Jacksonville, FL --- Chris Coghlan doubled in the tying runs in the sixth, then a double from Lorenzo Scott pushed Carolina ahead of Jacksonville in the seventh as the Mudcats rallied past the Suns for their fourth straight victory, 6-3 in the series opener at the Baseball Grounds on Monday night.

Carolina (8-3) moved into sole possession of first place with the victory over the Suns, one game ahead of the Tennessee Smokies.

Chris Volstad permitted a pair of runs in the Suns' fourth inning to fall behind, but escaped further damage by striking out opposing pitcher James McDonald with the bases loaded, followed by a double play grounder.

Carolina scored three more times in the eighth to stretch the lead to 6-2 on a single by Brett Hayes, which was followed by a two-out error by Jacksonville first baseman Rene Rivera, who mishandled pinch-hitter Alberto Concepcion's spinning grounder on the grass.

McDonald fanned nine over 5 1/3 innings, while Volstad allowed seven of Jacksonville's eight hits, striking out one.   Willie Glen (W, 2-0) earned his second win of the season in relief, whiffing three Suns hitters in the sixth.  Jeff Gogal worked a perfect seventh while Carlos Martinez served up a home run to Lucas May in the eighth.

Todd Doolittle (S, 4) remained perfect in save opportunities, notching his fourth in a scoreless ninth.   Carolina picked up only six hits against the Suns (4-7), with five coming from the sixth inning through the remainder of the game. Coghlan led the offense with a pair of hits and his league-leading sixth stolen base.

Ryan Tucker (0-1, 2.70) starts Tuesday night against top-ranked Los Angeles Dodgers prospect lefty Clayton Kershaw at 7:05 PM ET.
