Carolina Mudcats (7-3) 9, Montgomery Biscuits (3-7) 2

Zebulon, NC --- The Carolina Mudcats hit a grand slam in consecutive games for the first time in club history, leading the Mudcats past the Montgomery Biscuits 9-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.

One day after Lee Mitchell hit a slam in his first game back at Double-A, Andrew Jenkins clobbered a 3-1 pitch out to left field with the bases loaded against Biscuits reliever Jeffrey Kamrath as the Mudcats (7-3) remained in an early season first-place tie. Jenkins' first home run of the year extended Carolina's lead to 9-2.

Heading to Jacksonville to face the Suns for the first of 29 meetings Monday night, the Mudcats sit atop the Northern Division tied with the Tennessee Smokies. The early season pacesetting Huntsville Stars dropped out of first for the first time this season, losing to West Tenn on Sunday. Montgomery (3-7), the two-time defending Southern League champions, lost a pair of early game one-run leads. Erold Andrus hit the game's third pitch for a home run to right from winning pitcher Brett Sinkbeil (W, 1-1). After the Mudcats tied the game in the bottom half, the Biscuits took their final lead in the second 2-1.

Carolina scored three times in the third for a lead it would not relinquish. Extra base hits by John Raynor and Gaby Sanchez ignited the inning, while singles by Chris Coghlan and Alberto Concepcion drove home runs. Mitchell added a sacrifice fly. The Mudcats knocked out Montgomery starter Mike Wlodarczyk (L, 0-1) in the fifth with Mitchell scoring on a liner by Jenkins that hit reliever Jeremy Flanagan on the glove. Wlodarczyk had permitted a one-out walk to Mitchell, followed by a single from Concepcion before Flanagan entered.

Jenkins' seventh inning blast occurred after a walk to Sanchez, double by Mitchell and an intentional walk to Concepcion. Sinkbeil, who earned his first Double-A win, worked six innings, permitting six hits and two runs. Jacob Marceaux and Chris Mobley combined for three shutout innings to cap Carolina's third consecutive win.

Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.25) starts opposite James McDonald (0-0, 2.57) against the Suns at 7:05 PM ET Monday night from the Baseball Grounds.
