Carolina Mudcats (6-3) 11, Montgomery Biscuits (3-6) 8
Zebulon, NC --- After flying over 2,000 miles earlier in the day from Triple-A to Double-A, Lee Mitchell drilled a grand slam to assist the Carolina Mudcats to an 11-8 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Mitchell, who was demoted to the Mudcats after collecting two hits for Albuquerque on Friday night, landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport around 1:30 PM, then smacked a pitch from reliever Roger Deago over the left field wall as the Mudcats assumed a 9-3 lead.
Carolina (6-3) added two runs in the eighth to seemingly put the game away, but Montgomery (3-6) scored five times in the ninth against reliever Jesus Delgado. The first six batters reached on four hits, a walk and an error, but Delgado pushed through the frame, stranding the tying run in the on-deck circle as John Jason grounded out to end the game.
With the victory, the Mudcats moved into a first-place tie with Huntsville in the Northern Division.
Rick Vanden Hurk (W, 1-0), making his first minor league start since his demotion from the Florida Marlins starting rotation earlier in the week, dominated the Biscuits through the first five innings.
Vanden Hurk allowed a three-run homer in the sixth to ex-Mudcat Ronnie Merrill, the first allowed by Mudcats pitching all season, and was pulled three hitters later. Vanden Hurk fanned seven, walked one over his 5 2/3 innings. The Mudcats aggregated a season-high 15 hits, including three by Gaby Sanchez.
Brett Sinkbeil (0-1, 3.60) starts the series finale Sunday at 2:00 PM ET against Mike Wlodarczyk (0-0, 6.00). Carolina begins a five-game road trip at Jacksonville on Monday night.
