| Carolina Mudcats (5-3) 4, Montgomery Biscuits (3-5) 2
Zebulon, NC --- Alberto Concepcion doubled in three runs in the sixth inning catapulting the Carolina Mudcats to a 4-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits before 5,823 fans at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, Manuel Mayorson started the rally against Biscuits reliever Jon Barratt (L, 0-1) with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, John Raynor walked followed by a single to right by Chris Coghlan to fill the bases. Barratt then unleashed a wild pitch to tie the game. After another walk from Barratt filled the bases, Jeremy Flanagan entered and surrendered a double to Concepcion over left fielder Johnny Raburn's head to score three runs for a 4-1 lead.
The Carolina (5-3) bullpen pitched effectively enough behind starter Aaron Thompson, who worked five innings, allowing two hits and one run. Jacob Marceaux (W, 1-0) notched the win with two scoreless innings, striking out four. Carlos Martinez relieved Marceaux and faced the tying run at the plate twice in the eighth inning, but induced a key double play grounder from pinch-hitter Gaby Martinez before yielding a run-scoring hit by Rashad Eldridge. Todd Doolittle (S, 3) remained perfect in three save opportunities, but had to retire Pat Cottrell on a flyball to deep left field representing the leading run to end the game.
James Houser worked five shutout innings for Montgomery (3-5), allowing just a single to Concepcion.
The Mudcats continue their series with the Biscuits at 6:15 PM ET against the Biscuits. Rick Vanden Hurk, who was optioned to Double-A after starting twice for the Florida Marlins this season, will make his Carolina debut against Richard De Los Santos.
