Carolina Mudcats (4-2) 7, Montgomery Biscuits (2-4) 1
Zebulon, NC --- Gaby Sanchez doubled and homered, driving in three to power the Carolina Mudcats past the Montgomery Biscuits 7-1 in the regular season home opener for the Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.
Sanchez drove in a second inning run with an infield single, then walloped a two-run homer in the eighth as Carolina (4-2) won for the fourth time in six games, closing to within one game of first place Huntsville in the Northern Division.
Chris Volstad (W, 2-0) worked six innings, permitting five hits and one run en route to his second straight victory. Jacob Marceaux, Jeff Gogal and Carlos Martinez combined for the final three hitless innings.
The Mudcats scored a run in each of the first three innings, stranding nine baserunners. Grant Psomas drew a bases loaded walk in the first, while John Raynor hit a sacrifice fly in the third to stake Volstad to a 3-0 lead. Biscuits starter Jake McGee (L, 0-1) made 74 pitches in the first two innings and did not return for the third.
Volstad witnessed 11 of the first 12 outs made by Biscuit hitters on groundballs, including a fourth inning double play. Chris Coghlan had three of Carolina's season-high 13 hits, his second three-hit game of the season.
Montgomery (2-4) has won the Southern League championship the past two seasons.
Carolina sends Ryan Tucker (0-0, 1.80) against Biscuits righty Wade Davis Thursday night at 7:15 PM ET.
