Mobile BayBears (2-3) 2, Carolina Mudcats (3-2) 1
Mobile, AL --- Adam Howard blanked Carolina over five innings and the Mobile bullpen dodged a big sixth inning as the BayBears closed out the series with a second straight win over the Mudcats 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Howard (W, 1-0) permitted just two hits over his start and utilized a first inning double play when Lorenzo Scott was thrown out at home plate on the back end of a Gaby Sanchez flyball to right field. Howard had walked two of the first three batters he faced, but settled in after a jittery first inning.
The BayBears (2-3) struck for a run against first-time Double-A starter Brett Sinkbeil in the first inning thanks to a fortuitous bounce. Guillermo Reyes, who scored each of Mobile's runs in the game, grounded a ball along the first base line with Grant Psomas ready to field the ball for the second out. However, on the last bounce, Reyes' ball hit the inside of the base and jumped to the right and behind Psomas and up the right field line for a double. Sinkbeil then walked the next two hitters before a grounder by Rusty Ryal scored Reyes for a 1-0 lead.
Mobile tacked on another run in the third when Reyes came trotting home on a double play ball. Reyes had walked to begin the inning.
Sinkbeil (L, 0-1) worked five innings in his start, allowing just three hits, walking three and fanning five. Willie Glen and Jeff Gogal combined for three no-hit innings of relief.
Carolina's (3-2) best threat in the late innings occurred in the sixth when Chris Coghlan doubled past the dive of centerfielder Greg Thomson with one out. Coghlan then promptly stole third ahead of walks to Cameron Maybin and Sanchez to load the bases. Kris Harvey struck out against reliever Mark Rosen, but Psomas picked up an RBI-walk to force in Carolina's run. Abe Woody relieved Rosen and extinguished the threat retiring Davis on a grounder to third.
In the Mudcats eighth, Mobile closer Reid Mahon (S, 1) yielded a single to Coghlan to start the inning. Coghlan stole second base, and after Maybin fanned, Coghlan was balked to third base. However, Sanchez struck out on a 1-2 pitch with the infield in and Harvey grounded to short to end that rally attempt.
After winning the first three games of the season, Carolina managed just one run over the final two games and returns to Five County Stadium to begin the home portion of the 2008 Southern League season on Wednesday night against the Montgomery Biscuits. Chris Volstad (1-0, 3.00) will oppose the Biscuits' Jake McGee (0-0, 1.50) at 7:15 PM ET.
