Mobile BayBears (1-3) 5, Carolina Mudcats (3-1) 0

Mobile, AL --- The Mobile BayBears capitalized on seven Carolina walks shutting out the Mudcats 5-0 at Hank Aaron Stadium Sunday afternoon, handing Carolina its first loss of the season.

The Mudcats (3-1), which entered the game with the fewest walks of any club in the Southern League, started two innings by issuing consecutive walks to ignite Mobile uprisings.  In the second, first-time Double-A starter Aaron Thompson walked two hitters on eight pitches and surrendered one run on a sacrifice fly by Frank Curreri.  Thompson permitted just two hits over five innings, walking and striking out three, departing with a 1-0 deficit.

The BayBears (1-3) put the game away against the Carolina bullpen in the sixth.  Jesus Delgado relieved Thompson to begin the frame, and promptly walked two hitters on nine pitches.  Cesar Nicolas then drilled a 2-1 pitch up the third base line for a two-run double.  One out later, Delgado permitted another hit and was relieved by Chris Mobley.  Mobley fell behind Curreri 3-1 before intentionally walking him to fill the bases.  Mobley then received a grounder to third, which was turned into a force out at the plate by Gaby Sanchez.  However, Mobley then yielded a pinch-double to Cyle Hankerd to give Mobile a 5-0 lead.

Carolina's major threat occurred in the ninth inning, loading the bases against reliever Forest Cory.  However pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan popped out and John Raynor flew to centerfield to end the game.   Matt Torra worked six scoreless innings in his Double-A debut for Mobile, scattering seven hits and whiffing five.  Carolina outhit the BayBears 9-6, but stranded 10 baserunners.  Cameron Maybin went 2-3 with a walk, while Kris Harvey and Manuel Mayorson had two singles apiece.

The Mudcats conclude their season-opening road trip Monday at 12:35 PM ET with an internet-only broadcast against Mobile.  Brett Sinkbeil will oppose Mobile's Adam Howard.

Carolina opens the home schedule on Wednesday night against the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:15 PM ET at Five County.
