Carolina Mudcats (3-0) 5, Mobile BayBears (0-3) 3

Mobile, AL --- Carolina's unblemished start to the 2008 Southern League season continued on Saturday night thanks to Cameron Maybin's two-run triple in the eighth unlocking a 2-2 tie and leading the Mudcats past Mobile 5-3 at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Maybin, who hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning to knot the game at 1-1, drilled the first pitch from BayBears reliever Matt Elliott (L, 0-1) high off of the right field wall to score John Raynor and Chris Coghlan with two outs.  Raynor ignited the rally with a double to left-center, with Coghlan inducing a four-pitch walk from Elliott.  Maybin finished the game 2-3 with three RBI and a walk.

The Mudcats (3-0) spotted Mobile a lead for the first time this season when Greg Thompson singled home BayBears starting pitcher Hector Ambriz from second base.  Ambriz, a former two-way star at UCLA who earned a win while hitting a home run and knocking in four runs against NC State in 2006, laced an off-field double to begin the inning.  The BayBears were dashed later in the inning when third baseman Gaby Sanchez dived to stop a would-be single to left off the bat of Cesar Nicolas, instead coverting the grounder into the final out of the inning.

Ryan Tucker, making his Double-A debut, pitched out of duress in the fourth thanks to stellar defense from Maybin.  With runners at second and third and one out, Ambriz lofted a flyball to Maybin, who made the catch with momentum toward home.  Brandon Burgess tagged from third and was thrown out on a pinpoint, airborne throw to catcher Brad Davis to preserve the tie.   Davis socked an opposite-field homer in the fifth to give Carolina a 2-1 lead.

Mobile (0-3) tied the game in the seventh against first-time reliever Willie Glen (W, 1-0) on a run-scoring, one-out double by Greg Thomson, however Thomson was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.  Glen was making his first appearance in affiliated baseball since early in the 2005 season with the Birmingham Barons.  Glen had been pitching in independent baseball in Gary, Indiana since his release by the Chicago White Sox.

After Carolina went ahead 4-2, the BayBears made one final charge, filling the bases against reliever Jacob Marceaux with one out.  John Hester hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, with the other two runners advancing to second and third.  Yunesky Sanchez then softly bounced a hopper over Marceaux's leap, only to be saved by shortstop Manuel Mayorson, who pounced on the ball and barely nipped Sanchez at first base to end the inning.   Todd Doolittle (S, 2) authored a perfect ninth to earn his second save in three nights.  Tucker allowed four hits and one run over his 79-pitch, five-inning outing.

Carolina sends Aaron Thompson to the mound on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET against Mobile's Matt Torra.
