Carolina Mudcats (2-0) 6, Mobile BayBears (0-2) 2
Mobile, AL --- Brad Davis and Chris Coghlan homered to pace Chris Volstad to his first victory of the season as the Carolina Mudcats remained perfect through two games of the Southern League season, defeating the Mobile BayBears 6-2 at Hank Aaron Stadium on Friday night.
Davis connected on a 2-1 pitch as part of a hit-and-run in the second inning against Mobile starter Tony Barnette (L, 0-1).
Coghlan's homer cleared the right-centerfield fence in the third inning. Volstad (W, 1-0), who entered the season as Florida's 2nd-ranked prospect, retired the first seven batters he faced before allowing a scratch hit to Yunesky Sanchez.
Volstad was touched up for a pair of runs in the BayBears' fourth inning after Mobile loaded the bases on three straight singles ahead of a two-run single to right from Frank Curreri. Volstad wiggled through the rest of the inning, and finished his six-inning outing with a 5-2 lead. Volstad permitted two runs on six hits, fanning three.
Coghlan paced the 10-hit Carolina (2-0) attack going 3-5, with Andrew Jenkins going 2-4 with an RBI in his Carolina debut.
Chris Mobley worked two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced. Carlos Martinez tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on Mobile.
