Mobile, AL --- Burke Badenhop worked into the seventh inning in his Florida organizational debut, while Cameron Maybin unloaded an estimated 475-foot home run as Carolina defeated Mobile 3-1 on Opening Day at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Badenhop (W, 1-0) shutout the BayBears (0-1) over the first five innings, working 6 1/3 and allowing just one unearned run in his first official outing as member of the Marlins system. Badenhop was acquired in December as part of the Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera blockbuster deal with the Detroit Tigers. Badenhop pitched around a leadoff double in the BayBears second inning, and allowed his only run in the sixth inning when he was already staked to a 3-0 advantage.
Carolina (1-0), which won on Opening Day for the second straight year, scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning. Maybin, who entered 2008 as Florida's top-ranked prospect, took an 0-1 pitch from Mobile starter Brooks Brown (L, 0-1) over the wall in left field, over the recessed berm area and landed between 475 feet and 500 feet away from home plate.
The Mudcats added two more runs later in the inning on double up the third base line by #8 hitter Manuel Mayorson, driving home Gaby Sanchez and Kris Harvey, with Brad Davis getting thrown out at home plate. Mobile threatened Badenhop and reliever Jesus Delgado in the seventh, touching Badenhop with a pair of one-out singles before Delgado relieved. Delgado permitted a broken bat single to fill the bases before fanning the next two hitters to exit the inning.
After Delgado threw a perfect eighth, Todd Doolittle (S, 1) earned his first Double-A save, fanning Guillermo Reyes as the tying run to end the game.
Chirs Volstad starts the season's second game Friday night at 8:05 PM ET against Tony Barnette at Hank Aaron Stadium.
