Huntsville Stars (47-35) 6, Carolina Mudcats (44-38) 5
Zebulon, NC --- Mat Gamel became the first Huntsville Star to get five hits in one game this season when he went 5-5 to lead Huntsville past Carolina 6-5 Sunday afternoon in front of 2,417 fans at Five County Stadium.
Gamel had four singles and a double, scored twice and had an RBI against three different pitchers for Carolina. Three hits came against Crolina starting pitcher Josh Johnson, and the other two came off of relievers Tim Corcoran and Jeff Gogal. Chris Errecart also went a quiet 4-5 for Huntsville (6-6).
Matt Laporta had two hits, including a two-run double to center field to give the Stars a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth.
Right fielder Bryan Peterson made his Double-A debut for Carolina, going 4-4 with 4 RBI. Peterson's first hit was a double to deep right field, nearly clearing the wall. Peterson's other three hits were singles to right field.
Peterson's two-run single with one in the bottom of the eighth to brought Carolina to within one run, but the rally ended when Brett Hayes Struck out swing and Grant Psomas flied out to center field. Josh Johnson (L,0-1) pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing eleven hits and five runs, all of them earned. Troy Cate (W,1-0) pitched five innings for the Stars, surrendering six hits and three runs, two of them earned.
Juan Sandoval (s,8) earned the save for Huntsville, retiring all three Carolina batters in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Carolina (6-6) will send Rick Vanden Hurk (2-1,5.13) against Jesus Castillo (5-3,2.85) of Jacksonville Monday night at 7:15 ET.
